Clive Franklin, a Russian language expert in the Foreign Office, is summoned unexpectedly to Moscow to act as translator for the British Prime Minister. His life is turned on its head when, after over a decade, he discovers that his former lover, Marina Volina, is now the interpreter to the Russian President. At the embassy, Clive learns of a Russian plot to cut the undersea cables linking the US to the UK, which would paralyse communications and collapse the Western economy. Marina stuns Clive with the news that she's ready to help stop the attack, betraying her country for a new identity and life. Clive becomes the go-between, relaying Marina's intelligence to MI6 back in London. What are the odds that two lovers, running the Moscow marathon with the FSB on their backs, can save the UK and Western Europe from economic meltdown?

Sound, Space and Civility in the British World, 1700-1850 (Hardcover): Peter Denney, Bruce Buchan, David Ellison, Karen Crawley Sound, Space and Civility in the British World, 1700-1850 (Hardcover)
Peter Denney, Bruce Buchan, David Ellison, Karen Crawley
R4,134 Discovery Miles 41 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this collection, the essays examine the critical role that judgments about noise and sound played in framing the meaning of civility in British discourse and literature during the long eighteenth century. The volume restores the sonic dimension to conversations about civil conduct by exploring how censured behaviours and recommended practices resonated beyond the written word. As the contributors show, understanding changing perceptions and valuations of noise and sound allows us to chart how civility was understood in the context of significant political, social and cultural change, including the development of urban life, the extension of empire and the consolidation of legal procedure. Divided into three parts, Sound, Space and Civility in the British World demonstrates how both noise and sound could be recognized by eighteenth-century Britons as expressions of civility. The essays also explore the audible implications of uncivil conduct to complicate our understanding of the sonic range of politeness. The uses of sound and noise to interrogate British colonial anxieties about the distinction between civility and incivility are also investigated. Taken together, the essays identify the emergence of civility as a development that radically altered sonic attitudes and experiences, producing new notions of what counted as desirable or undesirable sound.

Shikeith: Notes towards Becoming a Spill (Hardcover): Shikeith Shikeith: Notes towards Becoming a Spill (Hardcover)
Shikeith; Text written by Ashon T Crawley
R1,265 Discovery Miles 12 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The first monograph by sculptor, filmmaker, and photographer Shikeith, Notes towards Becoming a Spill brings together a series of striking studio portraits of Black male subjects as they inhabit various states of meditation, prayer, and ecstasy. Shikeith describes the work as "leaning into the uncanny," visualizing ritual and the process of excavating Black men's erotic potential, the better to exorcise the "intangible presences that haunt their bodies and psyches." The men's faces and bodies glisten with sweat (and tears)-the manifestation and evidence of desire. This ecstasy is what critic Antwaun Sargent proclaims as "an ideal, a warm depiction that insists on concrete possibility for another world." In this revelatory volume, Shikeith redefines the idea of sacred space and positions a Queer ethic identified by its investment in vulnerability, tenderness, and joy. Shikeith: Notes towards Becoming a Spill is made possible, in part, thanks to the generous contribution of 7G Foundation.

Mariele Neudecker - Sediment (Paperback): Mariele Neudecker Mariele Neudecker - Sediment (Paperback)
Mariele Neudecker; Edited by Greer Crawley; Una McCarthy, Ariane Koek, Kerstin Mey
R686 Discovery Miles 6 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Mariele Neudecker is a German-born, Bristol-based artist working at the crossover of art and science. Her multimedia practice, which incorporates sculpture, video, painting and sound, explores the processes and effects of perception, the complexities and contradictions of landscapes and visuality, and the politics of representation and territorialisation. The influence of the nineteenth-century German romantic sublime is interwoven alongside inspiration from Neudecker's work with scientists, as a guest artist on the Arts at CERN programme, her trips to the Arctic and travel elsewhere. This major monograph, published following an exhibition of the same name at Limerick City Gallery of Art - Neudecker's first comprehensive solo exhibition in Ireland - presents more than 200 works from a 35-year-long career. In addition to a foreword by Una McCarthy, the gallery's Director and Curator, essays by distinguished academics and curators from across the fields of art and science address diverse areas of Neudecker's practice. A 'timeline' that Neudecker made specially for 'SEDIMENT' concludes the publication. Greer Crawley, an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Drama, Theatre and Dance at Royal Holloway, University of London, considers Neudecker's archive, studio and her working processes, while Ariane Koek, an international expert in the field of arts, science and technology, suggests that the contemporary sublime Neudecker is so often described as seeking is, for her, the very process of perception itself. Her comprehensive introduction to Neudecker's practice also discusses the tank works, for which the artist is best known, in which fibreglass landscapes are suspended in chemical solutions. James Peto, from the Wellcome Collection, London, focuses on issues of representation, post-colonialism and 'time', while Alice Sharp, Artistic Director of Invisible Dust, looks at Neudecker's work and collaborations concerning the deep sea. Klaus Dodds, Professor of Geopolitics at Royal Holloway, University of London, returns to questions of territorialisation in and around the Arctic, and Professor Kerstin Mey, Interim President of the University of Limerick, considers the genre of still life in Neudecker's photographic series 'Plastic Vanitas' (2015). Dominic Gray, Projects Director at Opera North, offers insight into Neudecker's work with sound and music, addressing issues of performance, translation and scale; while Pontus Kyander, an independent writer and curator based in Helsinki, returns to the motif of the forest, arguing that any reading of Neudecker's work might be taken beyond an interest in landscape and the sublime to incorporate contemporary ecological questions. Finally, Crawley's second offering returns to Neudecker's use of sound - its juxtaposition and superimposition, alongside the notion of the window as a device, considering how each creates 'temporal turbulences' and 'an entanglement of materiality, space, form and position,' foregrounding the artist's desire for viewers to see everything as eternally in flux. The publication, which is released to coincide with a new iteration of Neudecker's exhibition 'SEDIMENT' at Hestercombe, Somerset, in summer 2021, has been edited by Greer Crawley, designed by Herman Lelie and Stefania Bonelli, and printed by EBS Verona. It is published by Anomie Publishing, London. Mariele Neudecker (b. 1965, Dusseldorf, Germany) undertook a BA at Goldsmiths College, London (1987-90), and an MA in sculpture at Chelsea College of Art and Design, London (1990-1). She has shown widely in international solo and group exhibitions. Neudecker is Professor of Fine Art at Bath School of Art, where she runs the research cluster Making | Art | Science | Environment. She is on the Arts at CERN's guest programme, the European Commission's JRC SciArt advisory panel and the steering committee of Centre of Gravity, UK. Neudecker works with Pedro Cera, Lisbon; In Camera Gallery, Paris; and Thomas Rehbein Galerie, Cologne.

The Multi-Sensory Image from Antiquity to the Renaissance (Paperback): Heather Hunter-Crawley, Erica O'Brien The Multi-Sensory Image from Antiquity to the Renaissance (Paperback)
Heather Hunter-Crawley, Erica O'Brien
R1,263 Discovery Miles 12 630 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This volume responds to calls in visual and material cultural studies to move beyond the visual and to explore the multi-sensory impact of the image, across a wide range of cultural and historical contexts. What does it mean to practise art history after the material and sensory turns? What is an image, if not a purely visual phenomenon, and how does it prompt non-visual sensory experiences? The multi-sensoriality of the image was a less challenging concept before the ocularcentric modern age, and so this volume brings together a global array of scholars from multiple disciplines to ask these questions of imagery in premodern or non-western contexts, ranging from Minoan palace frescoes, to Roman statues, early church sermons, tombs of Byzantine saints, museum displays of Islamic artefacts of scent, medieval depictions of the voice, and Stuart court masques. Each chapter presents a means of appreciating images beyond the visual, demonstrating the new information and understanding that consequently can be gleaned from their material. As a collection, these chapters offer the student and scholar of art history and visual culture an array of exciting new approaches that can be applied to appreciate the multi-sensoriality of images in any context, as well as prompts for reflection on future directions in the study of imagery. The Multi-Sensory Image thus illustrates that it is not only possible to explore the non-visual impact of images, but imperative.

Based on more than 1.8 million records, this Atlas provides the most up-to-date information on the current distributions of both terrestrial and marine mammals in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. Many changes over time, such as the rapid invasion of the grey squirrel, the recovery of the pine marten and the decline of the water vole, are readily apparent from the detailed maps. Fully illustrated with photographs, detailed information is provided for 84 species, including descriptions of their ecology and identification, together with graphs showing the seasonal distribution of records. Data are also presented for feral species, vagrants, and cetaceans that have only ever been found as strandings. The Atlas will be an invaluable source of information to mammal enthusiasts, professional ecologists, and policy makers.

Law, Lawyers and Justice - Through Australian Lenses (Hardcover): Karen Crawley, Kieran Tranter, Kim D Weinert Law, Lawyers and Justice - Through Australian Lenses (Hardcover)
Karen Crawley, Kieran Tranter, Kim D Weinert
R4,134 Discovery Miles 41 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book engages with the place of law and legality within Australia's distinctive contribution to global televisual culture. Australian popular culture has created a lasting legacy - for good or bad - of representations of law, lawyers and justice 'down under'. Within films and television of striking landscapes, peopled with heroes, antiheroes, survivors and jokers, there is a fixation on law, conflicts between legal orders, brutal violence and survival. Deeply compromised by the ongoing violence against the lives and laws of First Nation Australians, Australian film and television has sharply illuminated what it means to live with a 'rule of law' that rules with a legacy, and a reality, of deep injustice. This book is the first to bring together scholars to reflect on, and critically engage with, the representations and global implications of law, lawyers and justice captured through the lenses of Australian film, television and social media. Exploring how distinctively Australian lenses capture uniquely Australian images and narratives, the book nevertheless engages these in order to provide broader insights into the contemporary translations and transmogrifications of law and justice.

Envisioning Legality - Law, Culture and Representation (Paperback): Karen Crawley, Timothy Peters Envisioning Legality - Law, Culture and Representation (Paperback)
Karen Crawley, Timothy Peters
R1,412 Discovery Miles 14 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Envisioning Legality: Law, Culture and Representation is a path-breaking collection of some of the world's leading cultural legal scholars addressing issues of law, representation and the image. Law is constituted in and through the representations that hold us in their thrall, and this book focuses on the ways in which cultural legal representations not only reflect or contribute to an understanding of law, but constitute the very fabric of legality itself. As such, each of these 'readings' of cultural texts takes seriously the cultural as a mode of envisioning, constituting and critiquing the law. And the theoretically sophisticated approaches utilised here encompass more than simply an engagement with 'harmless entertainment'. Rather they enact and undertake specific political and critical engagements with timely issues, such as: the redressing of past wrongs; recognising and combatting structural injustices; and orienting our political communities in relation to uncertain futures. Envisioning Legality thereby presents a cultural legal studies that provides the means for engaging in robust, sustained and in-depth encounters with the nature and role of law in a global, mediated world.

Ernest Crawley
R2,579 Discovery Miles 25 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

All study of the origins of social institutions must be based on what ethnology can tell us of the psychology of the lower races and on the primitive conceptions of human relations which are thus established. It is only in early modes of thought that we can find the explanation of ceremonies and systems which originated in primitive society; and, if ceremony and system are the concrete forms in which human relations are expressed, an examination, ethnological and psychological, of human relations, is indispensable for enquiry into human institutions.

Studies of Savages and Sex (Paperback): Theodore Besterman Studies of Savages and Sex (Paperback)
Theodore Besterman; Alfred Ernest Crawley
R1,795 Discovery Miles 17 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The success of my revised edition of Mr Crawley's The Mystic Rose has encouraged me to bring together in the present volume some of his papers previously unpublished in book-form, on subjects akin to those of his great work. Mr Crawley's treatment of these problems of sexual anthropology, especially on the psychological side, was, in the years in which he was most actively at work, too uncompromisingly original to meet with general acceptation, even in academic circles. But now his standpoint, which can perhaps be best described as being that of a profound psychological analysis on the basis of biological common-sense, is beginning to be appreciated. And the following papers will be found, I think, to contain all those qualities which so sharply differentiate Mr Crawley's work from that of most other students in the same fields.

The word 'aliens' can be used in many ways, to invoke fear, dislike and fascination. For biologists it is used to indicate organisms that have been introduced by people to new territories. In the British Isles alien plants are common, conspicuous, pestiferous, beautiful, edible - and can be both useful and harmful. Over the last fifty years, the study of alien plants has progressed from an eccentric hobby, enabling amateur botanists to increase the total of wild plants that they could record, to the full-blown sciences of invasion ecology and alien genetics. Alien species no longer present an optional extra, but must be accepted as an integral part of mainstream botanical investigation. The amount and breadth of data that has been accumulated on alien plants in the British Isles is exceptional. The subject has become familiar both to naturalists and the general public, due to such diverse topics as damage to the environment by Japanese Knotweed and New Zealand Pigmyweed, the attraction of bees and butterflies to cities by such plants as Buddleja, the court cases involving Leylandii hedges, the threats to the purity of our native Bluebell by the mass planting of its Spanish relative, and the cultivation of new sorts of Christmas tree. In this important addition to the New Naturalist series, Stace and Crawley provide a comprehensive overview of the many plants that have become an integral part of the British wild flora and a unique insight into why alien plants are so important.
